A shield is an energy field which protects the ship from spaceborne debris and hostile fire. It is generated (and regenerated) by the ship's shield generator. It can have varying levels of segmentation (single ‘bubble’, front/back, quadrant, etc.)[1]

Kinetic weapons partly penetrate shields, as the shields only slow down the bullets, rather than stopping them completely. However, energy weapons will completely be absorbed by the shield. This makes energy weapons more effective at quickly wearing down shields. Specialized shields are made by certain companies that focus on specific types of damage prevention, but lose defensive capability in the other types in exchange. Other shield manufacturers may focus on faster recharge rates at the cost of total shield capacity.
