Cloud Imperium Games Corporation, also abbreviated as CIG, is a publisher and video game developer based in Los Angeles, California, USA with studios in Austin, Texas, USA; Wilmslow/ Derby, United Kingdom and Frankfurt, Germany.[3][4] CIG is known for the development of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 and also for holding the Guinness World Record for the highest crowdfunded project.[5][6]
History[]
Cloud Imperium Games is the primary developer behind the multi-player game Star Citizen and the single-player game Squadron 42. Originally founded in 2012[1] by game developer Chris Roberts, who is notably known for the Wing Commander series, and his business partner and long-time international media attorney Ortwin Freyermuth. Under Roberts’ leadership using his long-standing relationships in the game space, Cloud Imperium quickly assembled a development team for the creation of art assets, story elements, and an extensive prototype for its first game Star Citizen that was demonstrated in the 2012 Game Developers Conference. Star Citizen is being marketed and launched via www.robertsspaceindustries.com. Cloud Imperium’s strategy is about customer acquisition through established fan bases in the games industry. The company believes that the online space through direct-to-customer relationships provides a tremendous opportunity in this regard that has been missed so far.[7]
